DR .DIPALOK BANDYOPADHYAY. Kolkata, 19 June, 2026. He was a bright star in the history of post-independence Kolkata’s newspapers. In our adolescence and youth, we used to eagerly wait to read his column in “Anandabazar Patrika” , As a political reporter and commentator, his unbiased and courageous writing in simple Bengali elevated Bengali reporting to another dimension. Later, when I myself took up journalism and writing, his work was our inspiration. Although I often held differing opinions from his perspective. His books like ”Pala Badaler Pala” (Times of Transition), “‘Indira Ekadashi” , “Siddhartha Shankar – Siddhi O Nirman” (Siddhartha Shankar – Accomplishment and Construction) , and “Bipak-e Stan” (In Times of Crisis) became etched in our memory. Without reading Barun Babu’s “Rajya Rajniti ” (State Politics), the day felt incomplete – he was a hero among journalists. Most of the time, his opposition to the ruling class landed him in considerable difficulty. Outspoken journalists always find themselves on the government’s blacklist. For this reason, he was imprisoned during the Emergency. Though his political initiation was in the leftist Forward Bloc, during the United Front and Left Front eras in West Bengal, he became the “de facto” opposition voice. Even though I wrote from a different perspective, I received his affection. In response to my letter, he had asked me to meet him at his new newspaper office. Remarkably, while being a journalist himself, he also founded and published the dailies “Bartaman” ,”Saptahik Bartaman” (Weekly Bartaman), and “Sukhi Grihakon” (Happy Homemaker) as their owner – publications that remain significant in Bengali journalism even today.
He used to say that unlike TV journalists, newspaper journalists should remain behind the scenes, away from the public eye. On his death anniversary today, I feel his absence profoundly.

কলকাতার কাগজে এক উজ্জ্বল নাম,
বরুণ সেনগুপ্ত – অনির্বাণ শিখা,
‘আনন্দবাজার’-এ যার কলাম
যৌবনের প্রাতঃরবি, নতুন চিঠি!
সরল বাংলায় রাজনীতির খবর,
নির্মোহ, নির্ভীক, তীক্ষ্ণ ভাষ্যকার,
সত্যের সৈনিক, ঝঞ্ঝার সম্বর,
বাংলা রিপোর্টিং-এ দিলে নতুন ছন্দ।
‘পালা বদলের পালা’, ‘ইন্দিরা একাদশী’
‘সিদ্ধার্থ শঙ্কর’ বা ‘বিপাক-ই-স্তান’—
শব্দে শব্দে জ্বলে আজও সন্ধ্যা-সকালবেলি,
মুখস্থ রেখেছে পাঠক অজস্র প্রাণ।
‘রাজ্য রাজনীতি’ ছাড়া দিন অসম্পূর্ণ,
সাংবাদিককুলে হিরো, অপ্রতিম গুরু;
শাসকের রোষে বারবার ভুগলেন,
জরুরিতে কারাবাস, তবুও নামলো না ভুরু!
ফরওয়ার্ড ব্লকে হাতেখড়ি যার,
যুক্তফ্রন্টে-বামে হলেন মুখপাত্র,
প্রকৃত বিরোধী কণ্ঠ, অকৃত্রিম সার,
স্বৈরাচারের বুকে যেন তীক্ষ্ণই শাণিত খড়্গ!
‘দৈনিক বর্তমান’, ‘সাপ্তাহিক’, ‘সুখী গৃহকোণ’—
সৃষ্টির সাগরে দিলেন নতুন তরী;
মালিক হয়েও রইলেন সাংবাদিকের ভূমি,
লোকচক্ষুর আড়ালে, টিভি-আড়ম্বরহীন!
আজ চলে গেছো, তবু কালি তো অমলিন,
নিঃশব্দে কাঁদে বাংলা সংবাদ-আসন;
অনুপস্থিতি তোমার বারবার টের পাই,
তবুও জ্বালাও পথ – সত্যের নিশান!
তোমার লেখনী আজো দেয় প্রেরণা,
একা পথ চলা যেন আলোকের খোঁজে—
সেই নির্মোহ সত্তা, সাহসের বীণা
অন্ধকারে বাজে, অমর সে সুরে!
