Rotary Honours Dr. Debabrata Sen with the “Ayurveda Renaissance Award” for Vocational Excellence & Social Impact…

Recognising a Legacy of Healing, Mentorship and a Vision for an Ayurveda Renaissance

Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 11th September 2026: The Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro City conferred its Vocational Excellence Award on renowned Ayurvedacharya Dr Debabrata Sen, recognising his distinguished contribution to Ayurveda, his commitment to patient care, and his continuing efforts to make India’s ancient system of healing relevant, accessible and meaningful to the modern world.

Dr. Sen represents a rare confluence of tradition, clinical experience, entrepreneurship, education and advocacy. For him, Ayurveda is not merely a system of medicine inherited from the past, but a living knowledge tradition with the potential to address contemporary challenges of health, lifestyle and preventive wellness.

The award was presented by Padmashri Tarun Bhattacharya, a member of the club along with Rotary Club President Arindam Ghosh & senior member Subhojit Roy. Present on the occasion were senior members of the Rotary club.

Over the years, Dr Sen has worked towards building a bridge between the wisdom of Ayurveda and the expectations of a rapidly changing society. His approach seeks to preserve the authenticity of the science while communicating its relevance in a language that today’s generation can understand and embrace. His work as a physician, teacher, mentor and entrepreneur has consequently extended beyond the consulting room to the larger cause of creating awareness about Ayurveda.

His contribution has also received recognition from the academic community. Recently, Dr Debabrata Sen was felicitated at Visva-Bharati University by the Vice-Chancellor Dr Probir Kumar Ghosh in recognition of his outstanding contribution towards Ayurveda. He was also invited to address the students of the University, sharing his experience and perspectives on Ayurveda, its contemporary relevance and the opportunities before the younger generation. The interaction reflected Dr Sen’s growing role not only as a practitioner of Ayurveda but also as an educator and advocate seeking to connect traditional knowledge with the aspirations of young India.

The next chapter of this journey is firmly rooted in rural India. Dr Sen envisions taking the benefits and knowledge of Ayurveda beyond urban centres and making them accessible to communities that often remain underserved. As part of this vision, he plans to reach 100 villages and 100 educational institutions across the coming year, using these platforms to promote preventive healthcare, healthy living, traditional knowledge and awareness about the appropriate role of Ayurveda in contemporary life.

Equally significant is his proposed Ayurveda Foundation, conceived as an institutional platform to nurture, teach, mentor and inspire the next generation of Ayurveda practitioners, students and advocates. The Foundation is intended to create greater public understanding of Ayurveda while encouraging young people to explore its scientific, social and humanitarian possibilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Subhojit Roy, senior member of Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro City, emphasised that vocational excellence is not simply about professional achievement, but about using one’s knowledge, vocation and experience to create a larger social impact. Dr Sen’s journey exemplifies this philosophy by transforming professional expertise into a continuing mission of healing, education and community service.

“He is a true change maker. Rotary International’s key message is ‘Create a Lasting Impact’, and Dr Debabrata Sen is a fine example of a professional who is turning his vocation into a larger movement for social impact, education and community wellbeing,” said Roy.

The award therefore recognises not merely the achievements of an individual physician, but a larger vision—to take Ayurveda from heritage to relevance, from individual practice to community empowerment, and from one generation to the next.

With his proposed outreach to villages and educational institutions, his engagement with young students and the creation of an Ayurveda Foundation, Dr Debabrata Sen now looks towards building what he describes as an “Ayurveda Renaissance”—one that respects its centuries-old wisdom while giving it a contemporary voice, wider reach and a meaningful place in the health consciousness of future generations.
