Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 17th February 2025: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal disorders among women of reproductive age. Affecting approximately 5-10% of women worldwide, PCOS can cause a range of symptoms that impact both physical and emotional well-being. Although the exact cause remains unclear, it is widely believed that a combination of genetic factors and insulin resistance plays a significant role in its development.
“Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition which affects the women of reproductive age group, often causing irregular periods, elevated androgen levels (male hormones), and multiple follicles in the ovaries giving a cystic appearance. PCOS can lead to symptoms like acne, excessive hair growth, and weight gain, and it may also impact fertility. While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, factors such as genetics and insulin resistance play a role. Though there’s no cure, managing PCOS through lifestyle changes, medications, and fertility treatments can help control symptoms and improve reproductive health. Early diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan are key to managing PCOS effectively,” says Dr. Sugata Mishra, IVF Specialist at Birla Fertility and IVF, Kolkata.
Women with PCOS often experience irregular menstrual cycles due to the imbalance of hormones, making it difficult to predict ovulation. Elevated levels of male hormones (androgens) can lead to symptoms such as acne, unwanted hair growth (hirsutism), and thinning hair. Additionally, many women with PCOS struggle with weight gain, which can worsen the condition.
While there is no definitive cure for PCOS, it can be managed through a combination of lifestyle changes like a balanced diet and regular exercise, medications to regulate menstrual cycles and control symptoms, and fertility treatments for women looking to conceive. Early intervention is essential to managing PCOS, improving quality of life, and reducing the risk of complications like diabetes and heart disease.
In conclusion, raising awareness about PCOS and promoting early diagnosis can make a significant difference in managing this condition and improving women’s reproductive health.
