Staff Reporter : kolkata, 19th. December 2023.nScience City Kolkata, a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture organised a lecture on “The Other End of a Black Hole” by Dr. James Beacham, a physicist at the world-renowned Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, who delivered on the topic of exploration of black holes – the universe’s most enigmatic objects, today, on 19th December 2023 at the Mini Auditorium of Science City, Kolkata.

Dr. Beacham, a leading researcher at the forefront of particle physics, delved into the mysteries of these gravitational titans. From their mind-warping properties to the fate of anything that crosses their event horizon, Dr. Beacham, in this lecture, separated fact from fiction, shedding light on the current scientific understanding of these cosmic marvels.

He unexplored popular questions surrounding the understanding of the shape, appearance and behaviour of Black Holes: What would happen if you fell into a black hole? Would you be vaporized? Crushed into a point? Stretched into spaghetti? Or would you emerge at the other end of a new world – perhaps a new universe? What happens when the fabric of reality—physical or societal – gets twisted beyond recognition, and what does this mean for you, now and in the future, this paradigm was dealt with in detail in this lecture.

“As a part of its social responsibility, Science City is committed to providing a platform for the interaction of students, and teachers with leading scientists from around the world. This is one such attempt. Indian scientists have been involved in the design of many components of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, one of the seven mega-science projects in which India is actively involved. At the same time, Black Holes are always mysterious and intriguing and I hope this lecture will delve deep insight into many questions hovering in the young minds and inspire them to pursue a career in science”- said Shri Anurag Kumar, Director, Science City, Kolkata.

Around 350 students and teachers from 8 schools in Kolkata participated in the programm
