Nitish Roy : World Famous Art Director & Film Director, 8th, June 2024. Today morning is simply shocking to me. It took me hours to believe that Ramoji Rao Garu is no more. I still recall the first day of meeting him at Hyderabad.
In 1992, I was making a set for David Dhawan’s film in Padmalay Studio. It was a 500mtr stretched set that made everyone surprised. The tycoon Ramoji Rao Garu made a visit one morning to have a look at the same. The charming man introduced himself and asked me to meet him the next day.
I went to his office on the next day and much to my surprise he asked me to build a film city for him in Hyderabad, I felt I had the moon in my hands! I said, “I will try to make it Sir”. He replied, “Don’t say you will try! Make the best film city. I have always tried to achieve the best in my life, I want this one to be the best, too! Start working from tomorrow.” I was silent for a while and then replied, “Ok Sir I will do it!”.
That was the beginning of making the Ramoji Film City.
He stood beside me like an umbrella and I truly felt the meaning of the word guardian.
The sudden demise of Ramoji Babu has left me totally flabbergasted. I don’t know how to express my feelings. It’s a huge loss for the country.
