Staff Reporter :kolkata, 28th November,2023 The International Kolkata Book Fair happens to be the biggest festival in the state after Durga Puja. The upcoming 47th International Kolkata Book Fair will be inaugurated on 18 January, and the fair will continue till 31 January 2024. The fair will be inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt. Mamata Banerjee. Eminent poets, writers and other scholars will be present as guests of honour. Venue: Boi Mela Prangan, Salt Lake.
At the very outset, we would like to express our deep gratitude to Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt. Mamata Banerjee. She is the first to recognize publishing as an industry. At her behest, Guild representatives accompanied her on a business delegation to Spain. The publishers also had the opportunity to address and participate in the Creative Economy session at the Bengal Global Business Summit. We are grateful to the various departments of West Bengal Government and Bidhannagar Municipality for their overall cooperation to the Book Fair.
You must have noticed that the International Kolkata Book Fair 2024 had to be brought forward by a few days. The main reason for this is that the central and state board exams are commencing from the end of January and first week of February. We believe that this change in the dates of the fair has come as good news for book lovers, since they can avail the additional holidays of 23 and 26 January apart from the 2 Saturdays and 2 Sundays to enjoy the fair.
As you know, currently the International Kolkata Book Fair is the world’s largest book festival. Twenty-six lakh book lovers came to the 2023 book fair, and the book sales amounted to Rs 25 crores. As happy as we are at this unbelievable success, we are also a bit worried. Because many new publishers have applied to participate in the upcoming book fair, but the size of the fair premises remains the same. Nonetheless, we are still planning on how to give space to more newcomers in the fair.
We are very happy that the focal theme country of the 47th International Kolkata Book Fair is the United Kingdom (UK), a country with which we have a close historical, cultural and diplomatic relationship. Moreover, 2023-2024 marks the 75 years of presence of British Council in India. The British Council has been an integral part of the book fair since very long. They played a major role in 1998 and 2015, like this year, when Great Britain was the theme country, and in 2009 when Scotland was the theme country.
Today, we have among us Mr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner, East and North East India, and Dr Debanjan Chakrabarti, Director of British Council, East and North East India. We will hear from them about their participation as a focal theme in the book fair.
Like every year, countries like America, France, Italy, Spain, Thailand, Australia, Bangladesh, Peru, Argentina, Colombia etc. are participating in the upcoming book fair. Germany will participate after 12 years. Besides, there are publications of other states of India, such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Telangana, Kerala, Odisha, etc. As always, there will be Little Magazine Pavilion, Children’s Pavilion and other attractions too.
One of the highlights of the International Kolkata Book Fair, the three-day Kolkata Literature Festival, KLF, will be held from 26 to 28 January 2024.

৪৭ তম কলকাতা আন্তর্জাতিক বইমেলা ২০২৪…..।
নিজস্ব প্রতিনিধি : কলকাতা, ২৮ নভেম্বর, ২০২৩। শারদ উৎসবের পরে এই রাজ্যের সবচেয়ে বড় উৎসব, আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলা। আগামী ৪৭তম আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলার উদ্বোধন ১৮ জানুয়ারি, মেলা চলবে ৩১ জানুয়ারি ২০২৪ পর্যন্ত। মেলার উদ্বোধন করবেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মাননীয় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী শ্রীমতী মমতা ব্যানার্জী। সম্মাননীয় অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত থাকবেন বিশিষ্ট কবি সাহিত্যিক ও অন্যান্য গুণিজন। স্থান, বইমেলা প্রাঙ্গণ, সল্টলেক।
প্রথমেই পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মাননীয় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী শ্রীমতী মমতা ব্যানার্জীকে গভীর কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাতে চাই। এই প্রথম প্রকাশনাকে শিল্প হিসেবে তিনি স্বীকৃতি দিয়েছেন। মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর আনুকূল্যে গিল্ডের প্রতিনিধিরা তাঁর সঙ্গে বিজনেস ডেলিগেশনে স্পেন সফরে গেছিলেন, প্রকাশকরা সুযোগ পেয়েছিলেন বেঙ্গল গ্লোবাল বিজনেস সামিটে ক্রিয়েটিভ ইকনমি সেশনে বক্তব্য রাখা ও অংশগ্রহণ করার। বইমেলায় সার্বিক সহযোগিতার জন্য আমরা কৃতজ্ঞ পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের অন্যান্য দপ্তর এবং বিধাননগর পৌরসংস্থার কাছেও।
আপনারা নিশ্চয়ই দেখেছেন, আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলা ২০২৪ কয়েকদিন এগিয়ে নিয়ে আসতে হয়েছে। এর প্রধান কারণ, বাংলা ও ইংরেজি মাধ্যম স্কুলের বোর্ড পরীক্ষা শুরু হয়ে যাচ্ছে জানুয়ারির শেষ থেকে। মেলার এই সময় পরিবর্তন বইপ্রেমীদের কাছে সুখবর বলেই মনে করছি, তাঁরা ২ টি শনিবার ও ২টি রবিবার ছাড়াও এবার পাবেন ২৩ ও ২৬ জানুয়ারি ছুটির দিন।
আপনারা জানেন, বর্তমানে আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলা পৃথিবীর বৃহত্তম পাঠকধন্য বই উৎসব। ২০২৩ সালের বইমেলায় এসেছিলেন ২৬ লক্ষ বইপ্রেমী মানুষ, বই বিক্রির পরিমাণ ২৫ কোটি টাকা। এই অভাবনীয় সাফল্যে আমরা যেমন আনন্দিত, তেমনই কিছুটা চিন্তান্বিতও। কারণ, আগামী বইমেলায় অংশগ্রহণের জন্য অনেক নতুন প্রকাশক আবেদন করেছেন। অথচ বইমেলা প্রাঙ্গণের পরিসর একই আছে। তবু পরিকল্পনা চলছে, কী করে আরও নতুনদের মেলায় জায়গা দেওয়া যায়।
আমরা অত্যন্ত আনন্দিত, ৪৭তম আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলার ফোকাল থিম কান্ট্রি ইউনাইটেড কিংডম (UK), যে দেশের সঙ্গে আমাদের ঐতিহাসিক, সাংস্কৃতিক, কূটনৈতিক সম্পর্ক নিবিড়। তাছাড়া, বইমেলার অবিচ্ছেদ্য অংশ ব্রিটিশ কাউন্সিলেরও ২০২৩-২৪ ভারতে উপস্থিতির ৭৫ বছর। এবারের মতো, ১৯৯৮ ও ২০১৫ তে যখন গ্রেট ব্রিটেন থিম ছিল, এবং ২০০৯ তে যখন থিম ছিল স্কটল্যান্ড, তখনও তারা প্রধান ভূমিকা পালন করেছেন।
আজ আমাদের মধ্যে রয়েছেন পূর্ব ও উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের ব্রিটিশ উপরাষ্ট্রদূত মিস্টার অ্যান্ড্রু ফ্লেমিং এবং ব্রিটিশ কাউন্সিলের পূর্ব ও উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের ডিরেক্টর ড. দেবাঞ্জন চক্রবর্তী। বইমেলায় ফোকাল থিম হিসেবে অংশগ্রহণের বিষয়ে তাঁদের কাছ থেকে আমরা শুনব।
প্রতিবছরের মতো আগামী বইমেলায় অংশগ্রহণ করছেন আমেরিকা, ফ্রান্স, ইতালি, স্পেন, থাইল্যান্ড, অস্ট্রেলিয়া, বাংলাদেশ, পেরু, আর্জেন্টিনা, কলম্বিয়া প্রভৃতি দেশ, জার্মানি থাকছেন ১২ বছর পর। এছাড়া থাকছে ভারতের অন্যান্য রাজ্য, যেমন দিল্লি, উত্তরপ্রদেশ, মধ্যপ্রদেশ, হরিয়ানা, পাঞ্জাব, তামিলনাডু, গুজরাট, মহারাষ্ট্র, বিহার, অসম, ঝাড়খন্ড, তেলেঙ্গানা, কেরালা, উড়িষ্যা… ইত্যাদি রাজ্যের প্রকাশনাও থাকছে। যথারীতি থাকবে লিটল ম্যাগাজিন প্যাভিলিয়ন, চিলড্রেনস প্যাভিলিয়ন ও অন্যান্য আকর্ষণও।
আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলার অন্যতম আকর্ষণ, তিনদিনের কলকাতা লিটারেচার ফেস্টিভ্যাল, KLF, অনুষ্ঠিত হবে ২৬ থেকে ২৮ জানুয়ারি ২০২৪।
