Sundarbans Through Young Eyes: Celebrates Art and Culture….

September 2024.“Children of the Sundarbans,” an exhibition recently organised to provide a platform to the young artists from Vivekananda Adarsha Vidyalaya, a school located in the heart of the Sundarbans, to share their unique perspective on life through their colourful paintings. In addition to the students’ artwork, the exhibition featured a stunning collection of black-and-white photographs by visual artist Gaurav Rai.

The exhibition presented the essence of the Sundarbans through the eyes of children aged 5 to 15, who explained their paintings reflecting life in this unique region. Alongside their artwork, the students also presented traditional dance, music, and poetry, giving a deeper glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Sundarbans.

The event was graced by Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East & North East India and many other eminent personalities.

Vivekananda Adarsha Vidyalaya, nestled in Sankijan village, South 24 Parganas, is run by Vivekananda Sangha and the Anu Chowdhury Memorial Educational Foundation.

Arnab Chatterjee, General Manager, Taj Bengal, Kolkata, supported the initiative, encouraging and inspiring the young artists. Joykrishna Haldar, social activist and the President, Anu Chowdhury Memorial Educational Foundation, said that the cultural celebration highlighted the simplicity, resilience, and beauty of the Sundarbans and its people.

Prof. Ujjwal Anu Chowdhury, Secretary, Anu Chowdhury Memorial Educational Foundation, added that the exhibition offers an enriching experience, blending art, culture, and community spirit from one of India’s most picturesque and ecologically significant regions.
