News Stardom : Kolkata, 15th December 2021: Today, Operation Straight Spine (OSS) is back in operation in the aftermath of COVID-19 disaster in Kolkata, directed by Prof. (Dr.) Ujjwal K Debnath (India/UK) and Prof. (Dr.) Jeffrey R McConnell (USA). For the last 15 years, members of the OSS Trust from the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and India have provided poor patients with professional spine surgery therapy. The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) of the United States has selected OSS as the country’s first Global Outreach site. The 15th Live Spine Deformity Surgical Workshop organized by Jagannath Gupta Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital (JIMSH) in association with Operation Straight Spine Trust in gracious presence of Dr. Ujjwal Kanti Debnath Professor of Orthopaedics, Department of Orthopaedic & Spinal Surgery, JIMSH and other medical professionals from India & abroad with Mr. KK Gupta, Vice-Chairman, JIMSH.

Spinal deformity surgery is a complicated treatment that can only be performed with specialist equipment and implants and specialized surgeons. There are few low-cost options to surgery that address many spinal disorders or abnormalities, particularly in youngsters. This is frequently the reason why spinal surgery is so uncommon in nations that struggle to provide even basic medical care. From 2006 to 2017, the annual OSS workshop was held at Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan in Kolkata, and in Feb 2020 it was held in IPGMER & SSKM hospital, Kolkata but this year the trust collaborated for the first time with Jagannath Gupta Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital (JIMSH) to provide this service and continue an annual charitable spinal deformity workshop that will benefit many underprivileged children and adults. The initiative also seeks to teach residents, junior doctors, and medical students from JIMSH, as well as nurses (especially ward and OT nurses) & physiotherapists. This program, will contribute to post-graduate education through interactive symposiums, and the development of facilities for regular workshops with foreign and national faculty.

While addressing the Media *Dr. Ujjwal Kanti Debnath, Professor of Orthopedics, Department of Orthopedic & Spinal Surgery, JIMSH* said, “The conference’s organizing secretary and the founder of “Operation Straight Spine Trust” under the OSS programme. I performed three severe spinal deformity operations and a few additional procedures at Ganga Hospital for Special Surgery in Hisar, Haryana only in the last week (28th Nov -3rdDec 2021), the project’s purpose was to provide philanthropic specialist spine surgery for deprived children with spinal deformity. This was the first timeScoliosis surgery was undertaken in the state of Haryana. The spinal surgical workshop and symposium will be attended by our International faculty of Surgeons, Anesthetists, Nurses, and Paramedics from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. This year, we have planned the operation of 10 patients with spinal deformity here at JIMSH and we are pleased to say that it is entirely philanthropic. It gives us great pleasure to inform you that in the future, we want to extend our hand to more impoverished children and adults.”

*According to Mr. KK Gupta, Vice-Chairman, JIMSH said* “We planned this unique conference and surgical workshop in Kolkata with the intent of educating ourselves with practical recommendations for handling pre and post operational care of such a difficult spinal condition in children and adults by surgeons from around the world. It is the 15th straight year of the surgical clinic organized by “Operation Straight Spine Trust” with the goal of providing complete medical and cutting-edge surgical care to children and adults from socially impoverished regions who would not otherwise have access or could not afford such treatment.”
