Remembering Supriti Ghosh – who immortalized the song “Bajlo Alor Benu“….

Aniket Debnath : kolkata, 6th. September, 2022. Supriti Ghosh, the melodious voice that ushers in Durga Puja on All India Radio in the wee hours of Mahalaya was remembered. The ace singer of yester years was paid tribute through a musical soiree organized by Chaiti Chatterjee, daughter of Late Supriti Ghosh, and with help of her grandson Kaushik Chatterjee and granddaughter Shalini Gupta. Over 15 singers including Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta, and Payel Kar in presence of actress Shakuntala Barua on her 100th birth centenary month at Gallery Gold on August 14th, 2022.

Singer Born on August 28, 1922, Supriti’s, uncle Nripenda Nath Majumdar, a famous musician of the twentieth century, was one of the producers of All India Radio. Legendary singers like Hemanta Mukherjee, Pankaj Kumar Mallick, Hiren Bose and Raichand Baral used to come to his house. The Little Supriti got inspired by them and stepped into Garstin Place under his guardianship.

A trained Rabindra sangeet singer, Supriti also sang in many films as a playback singer, But she became a legend for lending her voice to “ Bajlo Tomar Alor Benu” of Mahishasurmardini. In fact, Bajlo Alor Benu and Mahishasurmardini both have attained cult status in Bengali life and become an integral part of Durga Puja. The singer crooned more than 300 songs.
