Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 29th. March, 2025. Desun Hospital, successfully saved a 12-year-old girl from Patna, Bihar, who was suffering from a life-threatening heart infection known as infective endocarditis. The severe bacterial infection had caused extensive damage to her heart valves, leading to significant mitral regurgitation. As a result, she experienced intense breathing difficulties, palpitations, and an inability to perform even the simplest daily activities. The child was admitted to Desun Hospital, where she remained under medical care for six to seven days before undergoing a critical heart surgery.
Upon admission, the child underwent a series of detailed investigations, which revealed severe valve damage with fenestrations, flail segments, and vegetations. The Cardio-Thoracic team at Desun Hospital carefully evaluated the case and opted for a valve repair approach instead of replacement, ensuring a better quality of life post-surgery.
*Dr. Soumya Guha, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Desun Hospital*, who led the procedure, stated, “Our primary goal was to preserve the native valve and avoid the complications associated with valve replacement. After meticulous surgery, we were able to successfully repair the valve while removing all infected tissue. The post-operative echocardiogram confirmed that the valve was functioning efficiently, which was a significant achievement for the team.”
Following the surgery, the patient was closely monitored in the intensive care unit under the supervision of the hospital’s cardiac anaesthesia team. *Dr. Subhendu Sarkar, Head of Cardiac Anaesthesiology, Desun Hospital*, added, “The child showed remarkable resilience during the recovery phase and responded well to post-operative care. Being able to restore normal cardiac function in such a young patient without the lifelong dependency on anticoagulants is a milestone in paediatric cardiac surgery.”
*Mr. Sajal Dutta, Chairman & Managing Director, Desun Hospital Group*, expressed his pride in the hospital’s growing expertise in complex cardiac procedures, stating, “This case reflects Desun Hospital’s dedication to offering advanced and life-saving treatments with a patient-centric approach. Our team’s ability to successfully perform intricate valve repairs in young patients showcases our commitment to excellence in cardiac care. We remain steadfast in our mission to provide the highest standard of medical treatment, ensuring better outcomes for our patients.”
The young patient was in the hospital for five days post-operation and has been recovering well under continuous follow-up. The successful procedure highlights Desun Hospital’s advanced capabilities in performing complex cardiac interventions, particularly in paediatric patients.
This achievement reinforces the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare and ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of treatment with the latest medical advancements.
