News Stardom : Kolkata, 3rd May 2025, Manipal Hospitals East, one of leading healthcare provider in Eastern India, took a bold step towards environmental sustainability, in association with the CII West Bengal Healthcare Taskforce and MAGPET Polymers Pvt. Ltd. and proudly launched the “Plastics Neutral Hospitals” initiative today at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, (a unit of Manipal Hospitals Network). This effort is aimed at transforming hospital campuses into plastic-neutral zones through the installation of sensor-enabled SmartReBins that promote responsible plastic waste management.
Today, at the facility of Medica Superspecialty Hospital (a unit of Manipal Hospitals Network), the launch signified the dawn of a new era in sustainable healthcare where technology meets environmental stewardship. Manipal Hospitals have always been in the vanguard of creating positive transformations in the healthcare system, and this effort reiterated its commitment to sustainability and public well-being without looking back.
The geo-tagged SmartReBins, which are PET bottle-shaped and are not meant to be moved or stolen, carry sophisticated in-built sensors that alert the central system for collection once it is full. This helps with on-time and efficient collection of plastic waste and allows the hospital to monitor the amount of plastic diverted from landfills. The collected PET bottles will be converted into high-quality recycled materials by Magpet Polymers and fed into a circular economy.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Hospitals – East, shared, “As one of the leading healthcare providers, we understand the critical need to address plastic waste and are determined to lead by example by creating a benchmark in sustainable hospital ecosystems. We believe this effort will inspire our peers across the medical fraternity in Kolkata to join hands in building cleaner, greener healthcare spaces for the future. With shared vision, we are glad to collaborate with CII and Magpet Polymers on this forward-thinking initiative that aligns with our commitment towards environmental responsibility.”
In a unique and socially inclusive approach, the initiative also connects the waste collection process with waste pickers, creating meaningful livelihood opportunities and integrating them into the formal recycling ecosystem. Being a participant in this initiative, Manipal Hospitals will also receive plastic neutrality credits that reflect their contributions to environmental stewardship.
Indroneel Goho, President & CEO, MAGPET Polymers Pvt. Ltd., stated, “It was indeed a very interesting initiative of plastic recycling and consumer awareness that we from MAGPET are jointly doing with Manipal Hospitals and CII and the placement of the SmartReBin, a technologically advanced plastic PET bottle collection tool has been placed at Medica Superspecialty Hospital today. It is a good initiative to make the hospital plastic neutral and we will do more such initiatives with CII. This drive is a process to not only make the hospitals plastic neutral but also look at how the state of Bengal can become plastic neutral.”
Mr. Rupak Barua, Mentor, CII, West Bengal, Healthcare Taskforce, stated, “CII State Council, West Bengal State Council along with MAGPET Polymers, have taken a unique initiative of recycling the plastic bottles in all the hospitals, all the member hospitals and we plan to extend to other hospitals under this project. Globally, we generate around 6.3 billion of plastic materials, plastic bottles and other materials out of that only 9% goes for recycling of the bottles and 79% goes for landfilling. The whole objective of this CII West Bengal State Council, the healthcare task force and MAGPET Polymers is that in healthcare space there is a need for recycling of the plastic materials and the plastic bottles so that we can reduce carbon footprint and encourage less landfilling by these plastic bottles
which is dangerous for the environment. Through this initiative we are taking an oath to make a greener earth, a greener place, a greener society to live.”
