Spread the love

Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 15 May 2025: In a remarkable display of medical excellence and human compassion, the team at Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, successfully performed a complex liver transplant surgery that saved the life of a 43-year-old man suffering from End Stage Liver disease(Liver cirrhosis).
A living donor can donate a portion of their liver to save the life of a loved one. The liver is a unique organ that can regenerate, making living donations both safe and life-saving. This case not only highlights the power of advanced medical care and familial support but also reinforces the critical need to raise awareness about living liver donation, a selfless act that can offer a new lease of life to those in urgent need
The patient, a Jamshedpur resident, had been battling severe symptoms such as continuous loose stools, weakness, and altered sensorium for nearly two years. He arrived at the emergency department of Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, in a critical condition, presenting with low blood pressure, haematemesis (vomiting blood), melena (black, tar-like stools), and rectal bleeding. Diagnostic investigations confirmed the presence of decompensated chronic liver disease with advanced complications such as Grade III oesophageal varices, severe portal hypertensive gastropathy, hepatic encephalopathy, and ascites.
Given the severity of his condition, the patient was promptly admitted to the intensive therapy unit and placed on ventilatory support. The team’s treatment plan was guided by a detailed medical assessment, including endoscopy, ultrasound-guided drainage, pulmonary function tests, and high-resolution CT scans.
The transplant surgery, which lasted approximately 14 hours, was successfully conducted after pre-operative medical optimisation. Post-surgery, the patient developed basal pneumonia, which was managed through intensive antibiotic therapy and respiratory support using High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC). Close monitoring by a dedicated team of consultants and nurses ensured a smooth and uneventful recovery process.
The patient spent a total of 14 days at the hospital after the transplant surgery. He was discharged in stable condition, with continued medical guidance for home recovery.
“This case stands as a testament to what timely intervention, medical excellence and family support can achieve. The wife’s act of organ donation not only saved a life but also demonstrated conclusively the profound impact of living liver donors,” said Dr. Rahul Roy, Consultant – Liver Transplantation & Surgical Gastroenterology, Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur.
Mr. Abhijit CP, Director, Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital & Corporate Growth Initiatives, Narayana Health (East), emphasised the broader significance of this achievement: “This successful transplant is a reflection of our commitment to delivering comprehensive and compassionate healthcare. It showcases the power of advanced medical science when combined with humanity and the strength of relationships. We hope stories like this inspire many to come forward and consider living organ donation.”
Reflecting on the case, Mr. R.
