Staff Reporter : Siliguri, 13th March 2026: Manipal Hospital Rangapani, one of the pioneers of comprehensive cancer care in North Bengal, in association with Lions Club, organized a special awareness session focused on women survivors, emphasizing the critical role of early detection and timely screening in improving outcomes. The programme brought together survivors, healthcare professionals, and community members to encourage open conversations. The interactive session was led by senior oncologists Dr. Anirban Nag, Consultant – Surgical Oncology and Dr. Arkoprovo Halder, Consultant – Medical Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Rangapani who shared insights on the importance of recognizing early symptoms, undergoing routine screening, and seeking timely medical consultation.
Globally, cancer continues to remain one of the leading causes of mortality, with millions of new cases being diagnosed every year. In India, over 1.5 million new cancer cases are reported annually, with breast, cervical, ovarian, and oral cancers among the most common types affecting women. Medical experts highlight that nearly 40% of cancers can be prevented through lifestyle modifications and regular screening, while early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival.
The event was graced by distinguished guests Lion Kedar Gajmer, Past District Governor, Lion Asha Gajmer, District Vice Governor, Lion Sujata Dhirasaria, District GAT Vice Coordinator, and member of Lions club of Siliguri Ananyo. The doctors also emphasized that with the latest advancements in technology and treatment strategies, many cancers can be successfully treated if diagnosed early, thereby allowing patients to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
Dr. Anirban Nag, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Rangapani said, “Cancer can be treated successfully when it is diagnosed early. Many cancers, particularly those affecting women, can be successfully treated when diagnosed at an early stage through regular screenings and awareness of warning signs. Unfortunately, fear, stigma, and misinformation often lead people to ignore symptoms or delay check-ups. It is important for women to prioritize routine health screenings and pay attention to changes in their bodies. Awareness is not just about medical knowledge it empowers individuals and families to seek timely care, making treatment more effective, less invasive, and significantly improving survival outcomes.”
Dr. Sourav Guha, Consultant – Radiation Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Rangapani further underlined the advances in treatment, “Cancer care today is far more precise than ever before. Modern radiation therapy allows us to target tumours with precision while protecting healthy tissues. The aim is not only to treat the disease but also to preserve quality of life. Awareness events like this help people realize that cancer is not the end of hope. With the right guidance and timely diagnosis, patients can continue to live full, meaningful lives.”
