Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation has been honoured recently with the Inaugural EASD Diabetes Global Impact Prize 2025 by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Dr. Mohan is the first person in the world to receive this prestigious award which is conferred on him at Vienna during the 61st Annual Conference of the EASD. Dr. Mohan also delivered the EASD Diabetes Global Impact Prize Lecture at the conference where he was honoured and felicitated for his lifelong contribution to diabetes by top leaders in diabetes in Europe.
Commenting on the occasion, Dr. V Mohan, Chairman – Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, said “I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive the inaugural EASD Diabetes Global Impact Prize. Dr. Mohan’s contributions have had a huge impact on Diabetes Healthcare, Research, Charity, Education, Training, Awareness and Policy, not just in India, but globally. Notable among his contributions are the largest epidemiological study ever done on diabetes – the ICMR INDIAB national study of diabetes. His work on monogenic diabetes, precision medicine and nutrition and diabetes are also well recognised. Dr. Mohan has published over 1800 papers, probably a world record by a practicing doctor. His research has attracted over 243,000 citations and has a ‘h index’ of 169 which is the highest among all medical doctors in India. He has also trained thousands of doctors, diabetes educators and nurse educators.
He also established the Chunampet Rural Diabetes Prevention model which is highly acclaimed as an excellent model by The Lancet for delivering diabetes health care and prevention to rural areas. His work in the field of Neonatal Diabetes helped hundreds of children in India to go off insulin and be treated with very inexpensive tablets. Dr. Mohan has conducted over 25,000 Free Diabetes Camps which have helped to improve the lives of millions of people in India. He treats thousands of diabetic patients completely free of cost including over 800 children with type 1 diabetes. He works closely with the Sri Sathya Sai Organizations and the Hinduja Foundation among others for this charitable work.
For his extensive contribution in the field of diabetes, in 2012, Dr. Mohan was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award given by the Govt. of India. He has also been honoured with the Dr. Harold Rifkin and the Dr. Kelly West Awards from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and FRS from the Royal Society of Edinburgh, in addition to 21 Fellowships and six Doctorates.
