Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 2nd June 2025, fighting all odds a 35-year-old woman weighing 90-kgs with history of ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage delivered a 755gram baby at Manipal Hospital Salt Lake. Under the supervision of *Dr. Polly Chatterjee, Senior Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecologist and Dr Pallab Chatterjee, Senior Paediatrician & Neonatologist,* the emergency C-section was performed at the 29th week of her pregnancy.
The woman had PCOD, multiple fibroids and subfertility when she visited at Manipal Hospital Salt Lake. Post the infertility treatment she conceived her third pregnancy. During her pregnancy, she developed pregnancy induced hypertension at 20 weeks with early onset growth restriction of the foetus. Her fibroids were growing in size too. At 29 weeks, in spite of all medications, she developed severe oligohydramnios (almost no fluid around the foetus) along with uncontrolled hypertension. She was rushed to the hospital and was put on steroids for lung maturity, post which the delivery was done.
*Dr. Polly Chatterjee, Senior Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecologist, Manipal Hospital Salt Lake,* said, “It was a difficult delivery as the baby was transverse lie that means the baby was not in the typical head-down position. The mother’s womb had no liquor or it can be said that there was lack of amniotic fluid and she had multiple fibroids. With the expertise of our dedicated team the C-section was performed and she could deliver the baby.”
The baby girl weighed 755gm upon birth and had to be kept at NICU for more than a month.
*Dr Pallab Chatterjee, Senior Paediatrician & Neonatologist, Manipal Hospital Salt Lake* said, “After initial resuscitation, we administered surfactant for lung maturation and started high flow nasal oxygen. Gradually we weaned the support as the baby tolerated and started orogastric feeds. Gradually we could wean the child to full oral feeds and was normal maintaining oxygen saturation in room air.”
The baby is doing well at present and has been discharged home with a weight of 1kg 15gm.
