Consulate-General of People’s Republic of China in Kolkata in association with local Chinese community successfully organized Dragon Boat Festival 2022…..

News Stardom : Kolkata, 6th. June 2022. The dusk of 5th June was blissful and auspicious clouds were shrouding the horizon of Kolkata. In Calcutta Boating and Hotel Resort, the Dragon Boat Festival 2022 were grandly held by the Consulate General of People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Kolkata and various local Chinese community organizations including “India China Cultural Development Association”.

More than 1000 people participated in the festival, including Consul General of PRC in Kolkata Mr. Zha Liyou, West Bengal Government Disaster Management and Civil Defence Minister Mr. Javed Ahmed Khan, Members of Indian Parliament Mr. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Mr. Nadimul Haque, CPI(M) State Secretary of West Bengal, Mohammed Salim, Former Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi, Mr. Kalyan Kumar Chakravarty, Former Secretary of the Central Vigilance Commission of India Mr. Anindo Majumdar, Former deputy chief secretary of West Bengal Mr. Rajpal Singh Kahlon, Vice Chairman of West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Ms. Maria Fernandez, Diplomats from Thailand, Bangladesh and Bhutan Consulates-General in Kolkata, President of All India Overseas Chinese Association Chen Yaohua and representatives of Chinese communities and Chinese companies, media friends, all the staff from Chinese Consulate-General in Kolkata and some local people.

The Dragon Boats Race was cancelled for safety and security concerns. CG Zha and the honored guests granted awards to five elite Indian Chinese students and encouraged them to achieve bigger success in their studies.

With warm-hearted words Zha Liyou welcomed friends from all walks of life present to celebrate traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. Zha gave a brief introduction of the origin and custom of this festival and wish for everyone’s good health and happiness. Zha also expressed his happiness that with joint effort from all, after 6 editions of Dragon Boat Festival in Kolkata, this 2022 festival has become another landmark cultural event that’s entirely integrated with community in East India and a friendship in town that’s committed to people-to-people exchanges between China and India.

CG Zha Liyou said that as we are speaking now the instability and uncertainty in the world becomes more acute than ever before, our global community is faced with more serious challenges. All nations should make common efforts and jointly respond to these challenges. To do so we need not only economic and technological strength, but also the strength of culture and civilization. China and India, as the two most-populous ancient civilizations, should be in the forefront to show our leadership. We should be able to draw inspiration from our civilizations, identify and tell our good stories, great stories, success stories and stories of compassion to be shared by the billions of Chinese and Indians, just as we are doing now.

CG Zha Liyou continued to say that the Chinese Consulate-General in Kolkata has devoted whole-heartedly to the promotion of Sino-Indian friendship and has witnessed return of the same from all friends here today. This Dragon Boat Race is exactly the live testimony to what Chinese leaders once said, “China and India don’t pose threat to each other but provide development opportunity to each other”. Therefore, making positive efforts for a healthy development of our bilateral relationship between China and India should be the common aspiration of everyone present here. Let us join hand, promote people-to-people exchanges and practical cooperation to build up a better future for all of us.

Minster Javed Khan and other honored guests separately made remarks on this auspicious occasion that through this event they get to know more about traditional Chinese culture and that they are glad to recognize the important contribution made by the Chinese communities for Kolkata. They thanked the Consulate-General of PRC in Kolkata for their tremendous support to the community and to strengthening bilateral ties all along the time and expressed strong interest in working together to forge stronger China-India ties.

Following award distribution to winning racers and scholarship distribution to top Chinese community students, all the people watched the splendid lion dance and special theatrical performances with great interest. Zheng Huiqun, the better half of Consul General Zha Liyou, invited local friends, women leaders, Vishwa Bharati University Cheena Bhavan students, together with diplomats and family members of the Consulate-General to sing melodious Tagore’s song “Alo Amar Alo” and Chinese song “Descendants of the Dragon”. A huge crowd cheered for the brilliant performance of Chinese and Indian artists and kept on clicking photos. Authentic Chinese food from Tirreti Breakfast Market and Tangra were provided in the place.
