“Waste to Wealth” workshop engaging 100 school children to transform single use plastic waste into educational and artistic models

Thursday, as a part of Swachhata Pakhwada, DGCI&S, in collaboration with Science City, Kolkata, a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, organised various programs and activities on the theme “Green Energy, Clean Energy.” Initially, a lecture on “Solar Energy: Applications & Opportunities” was delivered by Shri Anupam Baral, Founder and CEO of Geetanjali Solar Enterprise, who provided valuable insights into the diverse applications and emerging opportunities within the solar energy sector. Shri Baral emphasised the importance of clean energy for India’s future and highlighted the pivotal role of sustainability in driving growth within this vital sector. He also spoke at length on the various economic and industrial opportunities in the field of solar energies that the underprivileged sector of society can become a part of. Shri Anupam Baral has got national awards for commerciable patents, research and development efforts in small-scale sectors, and as a successful S&T entrepreneur.
He further conducted a workshop on fabrication and maintenance of solar lanterns in which around 100 underprivileged children from different NGOs, namely SoS village, Sapgachi Humanity for You and Me (HUM), Tiljala Shed, Kajla Jankalyan Samiti, and Aranyer Alo (an NGO working for the tribal children in the forest area of Bankura district), participated. The children got hands-on experience in the assembly and fabrication of solar lanterns and learnt a new skill that will pave the way for economic upliftment of the section. They were also informed of the importance of green energy for sustainability. At the end of the workshop, 100 solar lanterns were distributed among the underprivileged children.
Dr. Bandana Sen, Director General, DGCI&S, said: ‘To follow the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and to walk with the vision of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, DGCI&S is relentlessly working towards a ‘Swachha Bharat’, contemplating for a cleaner environment, roaring to refuse’ single use plastic’ and encouraging the harnessing of alternatives of ‘fossil fuel.” She further added, I am thankful to Science City, Kolkata, a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, for joining hands for this noble cause.

The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India successfully concluded the observance of Swachhata Pakhwada-2024, a fortnight dedicated to cleanliness, sustainability and community awareness held from November 1 to November 14, 2024. This initiative is aligned with the Government’s commitment to promote cleanliness and a sustainable environment for a healthier future. The Pakhwada began with a Swachhata Pledge on November 1, 2024, where the Director General administered the pledge to DGCI&S employees, reaffirming the commitment to a cleaner India. Apart from the various events under Swachhata Pakhwada, some key events and activities of are;
Comprehensive Cleanliness Drive: DGCI&S undertook a thorough inspection and cleanliness review of office premises, including the DGCI&S Canteen, the parking area and the historic Commercial Library. Efforts focused on reducing plastic use and managing waste effectively aligning with the larger goal of waste reduction and sustainable resource management.
Community Engagement – ‘Plant for Mother’: On November 5, DGCI&S employees participated in a plantation drive reinforcing the theme of a greener and healthier environment.
Educational Workshops and Scientific Talks: In collaboration with the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM), DGCI&S hosted a lecture on Plastic Waste and the Importance of Reducing Single-Use Plastics. Engaging around 100 school children, the event included a “Waste to Wealth” workshop where participating students learned to transform single use plastic waste into educational and artistic models showcasing creative ways to repurpose and reuse waste as a sustainable lifestyle choice.
Sensitization on Menstrual Health: On November 12, DGCI&S organized an awareness program on Menstrual Health and Hygiene targeting young girls aged 11-
15. This event which aimed to raise awareness on menstrual health and the importance of proper disposal of menstrual waste in a supportive environment was attended by girl children of three government aided schools as well as female family members of DGCI&S employees. During the event DG, DGCI&S presented an incinerator machine to each participating school to better support menstrual hygiene management at such schools.
Additionally, to spread the messages of the conservation of energy through the popular medium of performing arts, a cultural program was organised. A road show to emphasise the importance of green energy was also conducted, in which employees of both organizations along with participants & various other stakeholders participated to raise awareness amongst the community.
