News stardom : Kolkata, 16th July 2025. A 11-year-old Rampurhat kid who was assumed to be under spiritual possession due to repeated episodes of syncope from the age of seven was diagnosed with full cardiac blockage and had a Permanent Pacemaker (PPM) implanted at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria. The treatment was conducted successfully under the guidance of Dr. Soumya Kanti Dutta, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist.
The frequent episodes of fall in blood pressure leading unconsciousness began from the age of 7 years leading to significant school absenteeism and limiting the ability to participate in physical activities. Driven by cultural beliefs and concern his family, initially feared that he might be under some form of spiritual possession. In their search for answers, they sought help from traditional healers and rituals, hoping to relieve the child’s suffering. However, despite attempts, these measures provided no solution, and his condition continued to deteriorate.
The kid was finally taken to the other hospitals, however the accurate reason behind his condition couldn’t be diagnosed. He eventually visited Manipal Hospital Dhakuria where the underlying cardiac condition was first identified through clinical evaluation. Although the initial ECG appeared normal, but the fluctuation observed in the Pulse Oxygen saturation readings, ranging from 40-30, raised clinical suspicion. And after monitoring repeated ECGs, the diagnosis of Complete Heart Blockage (CBH) was confirmed. Considering the age, he was counselled at Manipal Hospital and finally PPM was implanted.
Dr. Soumya Kanti Dutta, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital Dahkuria, said, “Heart blockage in paediatric age group is not that common however there can be some genetic or congenital defects leading to complete heart blockage. At this age the paediatric veins are relatively small, and heart is not fully grown that made the process a bit challenging. Thus, pacemaker adjustment was done very precisely and meticulously.” The superstitious belief that made delay in the treatment must be countered with more awareness added Dr Dutta.”
Post-implantation the young kid is good and haemodynamically stable. He is in taking fat free normal diet and was discharged post two days of the procedure. The best part is he will be able to resume his schooling, and he will be leading a normal life now onwards.
