A 23-year-old youngster with episodes of rectal bleeding was counselled and successfully treated with advanced machinery at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria….

Staff Reporter :  Kolkata 28th June 2025, A 23-year-old girl who had profound venous thrombosis, which may have been fatal if left untreated, was successfully treated at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria. The prompt diagnosis at the emergency room revealed a clot in the blood vessel of the leg. Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Supratip Kundu, Consultant Endovascular Surgeon Dr. Shubhabrata Banerjee, and Consultant Gastroenterologist Dr. Kushan Sengupta were instrumental in not only making a speedy decision to do a colonoscopy but also advising the girl to proceed with the treatment. The youngster had visited various hospitals, but her ailment could not be diagnosed, resulting in an almost 6-month delay. The advanced machines and prompt response at the hospital made the treatment faster and effective.

Dr. Kushan Sengupta, Consultant Gastroenterologist, said “The immediate evaluation revealed a clot in the blood vessel of the leg. She also had complains of bleeding through her motion passage for the past 6 months. Colonoscopy was suggested but being a young female from a conservative family, she initially refused. She was counselled regarding need for colonoscopy as she would need blood thinners for the clot and we were not able to start those medications since she was already bleeding rectally. However, she agreed and the colonoscopy was finally performed.
Colonoscopy showed extensive ulcers which turned out to be due to ulcerative colitis on biopsy. She was started on steroids and she improved significantly.

Consultant Endovascular Surgeon Dr. Shubhabrata Banerjee, said, “It is important to seek medical attention if sudden leg swelling occurs in the background of strenuous work, long economy class air travel, stress or post bedridden status for even viral fever. Deep vein thrombosis is but the most obvious ailment and is a ticking time bomb. If clots from these deep veins are unattended and manage to reach lungs in substantial amount, it may cause sudden collapse and death within minutes.”

Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Supratip Kundu, revealed, “Deep venous thrombosis can occur at any age, thus immediate diagnosis is the key saviour. Identifying the symptom and sign is crucial else it may lead to lethal consequences. The treatment is available, but the vital part still remains in the early recognition of the primary cause which lead to these conditions like ulcerative colitis in the case of this young girl.”

This case highlights the importance of timely colonoscopy in a case of lower gastrointestinal bleeding and also the importance of counselling the patient and family regarding the benefits of a procedure. She was discharged after 7 days from the hospital, and she is doing well. She will remain under medication for some more time.
