Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 8 August 2025: DP World, one of India’s largest private rail freight operators, has launched two new domestic rail services to connect Gujarat’s manufacturing hubs with Kolkata in West Bengal. The new services, which link Bhimasar and Hazira to Kolkata, are designed to speed up cargo movement and support India’s “Make in India” initiative.

The Bhimasar-Kolkata service will run twice a month with a transit time of 8 days, while the Hazira-Kolkata service will also run twice a month with a 7-day transit time. Both services have a capacity of 90 TEUs per trip and will primarily transport goods such as edible oils, chemicals, steel, and food grains.

Adhendru Jain, Vice President, Rail and Inland Terminals, DP World Subcontinent, said: “These new services bridge two vital economic corridors. Gujarat’s dynamic manufacturing base and Kolkata’s role as a gateway to East and Northeast India. By enhancing connectivity between production and consumption markets, we’re enabling the smoother movement of goods like grains, industrial goods, chemicals, steel and retail cargo, supporting more agile supply chains and regional integration.”

“As India drives its logistics transformation under PM Gati Shakti and Make in India initiative, DP World remains committed to building future-ready infrastructure that boosts competitiveness, drives regional growth, and strengthens supply chain resilience” he added.

Gujarat is a major manufacturing powerhouse, and Kolkata serves as a key international trade hub, especially for exports like leather and textiles. These new rail services are part of DP World’s $207 million (₹1,800 crore) investment in India’s rail freight sector. DP World’s integrated logistics network, which includes inland terminals, warehousing, and Free Trade Warehousing Zones, is aimed at boosting competitiveness and strengthening the country’s supply chain.
