Dr. Debiprosad Duari : Director, Research and Academic at M. P. Bila Institute of Fundamental Research, Kolkata, 19th. November, 2021. The evening of The Beaver Moon, Rus Purnima, Guru Purnima – in whatever name you call it – it was a Full Moon.
But, today Moon was special, since it went through the longest Partial Solar Eclipse in few centuries. But, in India it could not be seen, since the eclipse happened when the moon was below the horizon, in most of the places. Kolkata experienced the last phase of a Penumbral eclipse but it was not very discernible with human eye.
Went up the terrace to see the Moon in its full glory. My dear friend Dwijo was with me, but lost interest soon ! The light of the Sun going down was spectacular , with some pigeons creating a photo-op, which I have labelled as Wings of Fire !
The rising of the Moon was simply spectacular. Because of the dust and haze, it was really “blood red” , telling all that not only during a lunar eclipse it appears darkish red in colour, but when it is near the horizon as well, though for different reasons. The Moon changed its colour dramatically, but to be truthful, I could not make any difference between the last phase of the penumbral eclipse and the Full Moon. But it was fun! Looking at the celestial object, closest to Earth, in its full illumination always evokes a sense of awe and wonder !
