Dr.Debiprosad Duari, Kolkata, 29th. December, 2020.

The last Full Moon of the year 2020 and for some the Last Full Moon of the decade. Since the moon will reach its maximum illumination (phase) on 30th December, 8:58 a.m., IST ; tonight, 29th December is the visible last Full Moon of the year, from India.

The moon tonight will be visible from the dusk to tomorrow’s dawn. Just after the sunset, got a fantastic view of the moon from the terrace. As times passed, the slight variation in the colour was noticeable. It was cold, but that’s how it should be on a “Cold Moon” Night !!

Because of the winter season, it is called the Cold Moon and since it is happening near to the Winter Solstice (21 December this year), moon will also be on the sky for a longer time than the average, and hence also termed as, especially in the Northern latitudes as the “long Night Full Moon”!.

It will be the highest Full Moon of the year and the thirteenth one in this year. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name Cold Moon has started from traditions of the native Americans.

The name refers to the frigid conditions of this time of year.
